There are more than 900,000 nonprofit, tax exempt organizations in the United States according to the National Center for Charitable statistics. Each of these nonprofit organizations are required to have a board of directors , a group of volunteers who have a shared commitment to the mission of the organization. The board has a shared responsibility to make sure that the mission is achieved in their community.
Most boards of directors, according to Board Source, a national organization concerned with the functioning of nonprofit boards, have 14 members. Having said that, some organizations are very healthy and, as a result, achieve their mission. Other organizations are unhealthy and do not function very well.
